Day 1: The Train (7/12/2010)

(note: So, it has become apparent to me that my 'short' summaries of each day will not actually be all that short. My whole life, I've never been able to write anything short so it's not really very surprising. So, sorry to those who can't stomach length, you'll just have to skim or skip :).

It has also become apparent to me that my internet connection won't always be good enough to upload pictures, so uploading will just have to wait until I'm able to get a good enough connection. It’s a bummer, but I promise there will be pictures eventually!!)

Today we set out on our three and a half month journey. We woke up early to finish packing, and to finalize the new pond waterfall set up. It was a real rush over the last few weeks to finish the pond project in time!

Our train left San Diego’s Union Station at 1:25pm. We arrived in LA at 4:05pm, and waited around until 6:30pm to board our train bound for Chicago. While we waited, we went outside to re-pack our bags in the hopes that we could check one. During this time, we were continuously bothered by panhandlers, and so, once we finished, we retreated back inside to get away from them. At the ticketing counter, we learned that we couldn’t check our bag after all, because it weighed more than 50 lbs (67 lbs in fact!!!). We didn’t bother to weigh our other bag... Needless to say, we failed miserably at packing light. When you are carting around two pairs of rollerblades, two helmets, and wrist guards, you know you didn’t pack light! But then again, it will sure be fun to use them. :)

Aboard the train, we settled into our sleeper accommodations. Davin was less than impressed... Poor guy! At 6'4", the tiny room sure seems claustrophobic. Also, when the train finally left, we discovered that we could have simply waited for it in Fullerton, instead of LA, which would have made a nicer waiting location. Ah well, now we know!

Dinner aboard the train was decent, and we met a nice guy from Maryland. He sure did like to talk. Davin wasn’t too pleased about this, but he was glad to have me there to answer all the guy's questions about our trip. He gave us his business card, and told us we could get all the free drinks we wanted at some famous bar in New York, all on his tab! Too bad we don’t drink... lol. But I took the card anyway to be polite.

Sleeping was interesting. It was a really rocking ride. I dreamt of earthquakes in San Diego, and that my house fell into a gaping chasm while I was inside. It fell for a really, really, long time before finally landing in a lake of magma. Davin had trouble sleeping due to the violent vibrations, and didn’t get nearly enough sleep.
