Day 20: Herstmonceux (7/31/2010)

We got up for our 8:30am breakfast. Davin and I are getting a little tired of the Full English Breakfast EVERY DAY. Bacon, eggs, sausage, potatoes, fried bread. It’s good, but it’s getting monotonous!

We packed up and were out of the B&B around 10am. We decided to head back towards Chichester to the Little Chef because I needed to send an email to Leigh. We are supposed to meet Leigh in Dresden next week, only after one day of rest in Bayreuth...

Our email business taken care of, we drove to Herstmonceux castle, about an hour and a half drive. Herstmonceux is a privately owned castle so tours are subject to availability. Unfortunately, there were no tours inside today. However, we were able to visit the castle grounds and admire the castle’s architecture. It is quite a visually stunning castle because it is constructed entirely out of red brick. We read about the castle’s history in the visitor’s center, and then strolled through the castle gardens until we had completed an entire circuit and found ourselves once again at the front of the castle.

Next we drove to Dover where we found the B&B we would be staying at tonight. We arrived too early to check in, and too late to visit Dover castle, so we went in search of a grocery store instead. We ate lunch at the store’s cafĂ©, Davin had a hamburger, and I ate a chicken sandwich. We had to pay for our ketchup packets... I hate paying for ketchup packets. We then got some supplies and made sure we had enough food for dinner.

We drove past the castle to check the hours for tomorrow. Then we checked into our B&B and discovered that tonight we actually had access to free wireless internet. Yay! I spent way too much of the evening just text messaging people back home: Scott, Mom, Amber, and Jona in Germany. We had our sandwiches for dinner, and enjoyed having the opportunity to just relax, especially because tomorrow is going to be a busy, hectic day!!
