Dad woke us up at 8am. I didn’t want to get up, but I had a lot to do and wanted to hopefully have a short video chat with Scott before we left at 10, so I rolled out of bed and took a shower to wake up. When I was done, Davin showered next, in the dark... I don’t think he was awake yet either!!
I brought my bags upstairs and ate a breakfast of jam on German rye bread. God I hate that bread!! It’s something Germans love, but I’ve never been able to get used to it, and I never will. It tastes like dirt! (Uh, no offense to all you rye bread lovers out there...) At breakfast, Dad convinced me I should leave my laptop at home so that none of us would be tempted to play games while on the trip. I agreed to it, as long as I could borrow his laptop to write my daily updates. He justified bringing his computer because he claims he needs something to do when he gets up all those hours before us. Hmm. It's nice to be the boss.
When I was all ready to go, Davin finally made it to breakfast and Jonathan headed off to take his shower. I headed back downstairs and used my precious free minutes to chat with Scott. I’m going to miss seeing his smiling face! Finally it was time to go, so I said “Goodbye” to Scott, and headed upstairs.
Davin and I milled around outside for 15 minutes before it was REALLY time to go. Finally, we all loaded into the car. As soon as all the doors were closed, Davin remembered that he hadn’t packed his belt! So Baerbel and I went back inside to find it. I looked everywhere I could think of but it was no where to be found. So we gave up and returned to the car. Then Baerbel remembered she had forgotten her glasses, so she jumped out of the car again. Then Davin thought he remembered where his belt was. So I jumped back out of the car and followed Baerbel back inside. D’s belt was right where he thought it would be.
At 10:30am, we were finally on our way. Our destination was Werfen, Austria, about a 4 hour drive. For the first two hours Jona and I listened to music on our mp3 players, and Davin napped in the back (he only got 3 hours of sleep last night). After two hours, we stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom. We payed 70 cents for the toilet ride. This one had self cleaning toilet seats! You gotta love those ones! I've taken a video of them before. :) When you travel the world you encounter some really interesting toilets. It's weird, but true.
When we reached Munich, we stopped at the Allianz Arena to eat a lunch of sandwiches. We also walked into the arena and looked at the FC Bayern Muenchen Fan shop. Then we jumped back in the car. Davin moved from the back seat to the front. Baerbel and I moved to the back. Dad put on Michael Jackson, and I fell asleep on top of the rear speaker with his music muffled beneath my pillow. Next thing I knew I looked out the window and the Alps were towering over us. I love driving through Austria! It’s such a beautiful view! I had only been admiring the mountains for about 5 minutes when Baerbel suddenly shouted, “Oh! It’s the next exit! We’re there already!”
We found our apartment in Werfen easily enough. It was quite roomy. There were two bedrooms, one with 2 beds and one with 3 beds. All of us kids chose to share a room. (We all know to stay as far away from Dad as possible when he’s sleeping! Man what a snorer he is!)
After we settled in, we explored the small town of Werfen, and chose to eat dinner at the local Italian restaurant. I ate a Wienerschnitzel because I was sick of pizza, and there was a special low price. Also, I hadn’t yet eaten a schnitzel since arriving in Germany! Davin also had a schnitzel, and Jona had spaghetti Bolognese of course! Dad ordered fish and Baerbel had some meat and noodle dish. The food was OK, nothing to write home about. Dad shared funny stories from his recent trip to Korea, and Jonathan told Davin and me things about the German school system that we were curious about. I decided to be adventurous so I ordered an Almdudler with my Schnitzel. Almdudler is an Austrian drink, it was sort of like a lemonade but strange. I liked it at first, but was sick of it by the time I got through the whole thing! Dad graciously bought me a coke to drink next.
Back at the apartment, Dad went to bed, and the rest of us played a game of Volle Lotte, followed by a game of Yahtzee. Baerbel won both! Then I went to bed early (at 9pm). Davin took a bath and Jona stayed up reading. I had trouble falling asleep. I was either too hot or too cold, but since we had to get up at 7am tomorrow, I kept trying to sleep anyway.
