Day 52: Childhood Memories Revisited (9/2/2010)

I got up at 8am to use bathroom. Almost at the same time, Dad came down to get Davin up to go to the doctor. I was surprised because I didn’t know what was going on. I guess Davin left Dad a note before going to bed saying he wanted to go to the doctor about his stool problems. Later, Davin laughed about how he didn’t realize that would mean going at 8am in the morning!

I went back to bed until 9am. Then I got up to chat with Scott on Skype. D came home around 10am. The Doctor said he did not think the problem was due to the medicine (something about how the color would be different...), so the doctor wants to do a Colonoscopy tomorrow... Davin is having the BEST TRIP EVER!! ;p

To prepare for his colonoscopy, Davin couldn’t eat again after 1pm. So Dad decided we would all go to eat at Adria for lunch (Davin’s pick) so that Davin could gorge on good food before fasting the rest of the day. After lunch, we would go to Weissenstadt to ride the Roddelbahn there, and rollerblade around Lake Weissenstadt. Two things Davin and I used to do as kids.

Dad loaded his bike up in back of car so he could go around Lake Weissenstadt with us. Then, Jona, D, Dad, and I drove to Adria. Baerbel came from work and met us there. D had a Pizza Napoli, and I tried the Pizza Esotica (aka Hawaiian). My pizza was pretty good but nothing really impressive. It would have been better with red peppers.

After lunch, Baerbel and Jona went home, and Dad, D, and I went to Fichtelgebirge. We decided to ride on the Roddelbahn first because the weather has been so unpredictable lately. The best deal was to ride four times for 10Euros. So we bought four rides, and rode two times each. This Roddelbahn was longer than the ones in Pottenstein. To reach the starting point you had to ride a Seilbahn (cable car) up the mountain. It was a really sloooooooow Seilbahn... Finally, you reached the Roddelbahn platform where you had to jump out of the two person cable car while it was still moving and get out of the way. Then you grab a Roddelbahn cart and haul it over to the starting point. I like this Roddelbahn the best (except for the slow Seilbahn part) because it feels the most dangerous. You actually HAVE to use the breaks while driving down it in order to feel safe. Davin didn’t like it because the seats you sit on are a bit small. We definitely fit better when we were children! These seats also had no seat belt or even a back on them. So you are the most free of the three Roddelbahns we rode on.

Next, we went to Lake Weissenstadt. We passed by an accident on the way where a large open top construction truck had tipped over by the road and its contents had spewed out into the field. There were crews working on it when we passed by. It seemed really odd because there wasn’t a sharp turn or anything obvious that could cause such an accident. I guess the driver just made a mistake!

At Lake Weissenstadt, Davin and I rollerbladed around the lake two times, and Dad biked. It was a lot of fun. There were quite a few other rollerbladers there too. Davin and I think it’s nice that rollerblading is still quite popular in Europe, unlike in the United States.

On way home, we barely made it past the truck accident before they cut off the road to begin work on righting the truck. I guess the whole time we were rollerblading the work crews had just been waiting for the lifting construction trucks to arrive. Lake Weissenstadt is a very remote place, and these trucks were needed to get the truck upright again.

We made it home around 5pm. Then I chatted online with Scott, Andrew, and Claudia. I also read some links. Dinner was leftover pizza. Around 9pm, I packed for my trip tomorrow, and went to bed at 11pm.
