Dad woke me up at 8am this morning. I rolled out of bed and wandered upstairs for breakfast. Davin was already up working on drinking the horrible Colonoscopy concoction. Poor guy. I ate some toast, and then went downstairs and finished packing.
At 9:30am, Baerbel drove me to the train station. She explained which track my train would come to, and I felt confident I would be able to get to Dresden on my own. I thought it was funny that I felt so unconcerned, because just a few years ago I would have been too scared to do anything so adventurous on my own. My German is still bad but it has reached a point where I feel I can communicate what I need. It is so easy to just explain that my German is limited, and to ask people to speak more slowly and more simply.
My first train left at 10:13am. It took me four stations down the line to Kirchenlaibach. I got off there at 10:30am. Then waited for the train to Dresden to arrive at 10:36am. I got on that train and found a place to sit. Then I spent the next four hours reading my backlog of investment articles. I made good progress, but was getting anxious for the train to arrive after three hours so I could stop reading! I was happy that I brought two tuna fish sandwiches and an apple with for lunch, because it wasn’t long before I was starving. Toast really doesn’t stick with you very long!
At 2:15pm, I arrived in Dresden. I was so happy to see my cousin Lissy who was there waiting for me. We took a local train to her apartment and then spent hours and hours talking about all kinds of things. Mostly about boyfriends and relationships though, which is absolutely Lissy’s favorite topic. :) We took a break from our chat to go to the store to buy some supplies for my dinner and lunch tomorrow. Lissy is on a really strict diet and so can’t eat normal meals. I tasted her lunch of crushed avocado, chopped tomato, and fresh parsley mixed with cottage cheese and thought it tasted quite good though. It was a kind of guacamole-cheese cream that she ate on a bread cracker. There is something very attractive about the natural, fresh, vegetable based meal. I think it appealed to the ancient hunter-gatherer in me.
When we returned from the store, we moved our chat outdoors onto her apartment’s balcony. Then we got a nice surprise in the return of Lissy’s roommate Maja. She joined us for awhile before leaving to have dinner with family. For dinner I had a frozen pizza that Lissy bought me from the store. Then we played games. First we played Yahtzee, but it was called Kniffel. Against all odds our game was tied at 226 points! Then we played Das Veruckte Labyrinth. I beat that pants off Lissy in that! I guess that’s thanks to all the hours that Whitney and I played it growing up. :) Finally, we got ready for bed and watched the movie Love Actually. It’s such a great romance movie. Then we went to bed.
