Day 73: Caernarfon and Harlech Castles (9/23/2010

We got up at 9am today for our Full English Breakfast. We made it to breakfast at 9:15, only 15 minutes late. We were as impressed with the English breakfast as usual. It’s NOT good! The only thing I like at all is the bacon. Davin tried the sausages again and determined that they are in fact completely disgusting. From now on if we get any more English breakfasts, I’m only going to get bacon and eggs. The bacon for me, and the eggs for Davin!

We were on the road by 9:50am, the earliest yet. Unfortunately, we then wasted 40 minutes yelling at each other because Davin questioned my directions. He got pissed because I yelled at him when he refused to believe I knew which way to go. In addition, he continually claims that we did not come the way that we in fact did. I don’t know how he drives someplace and then has absolutely no recollection of where he just drove! So I yelled at him, and he refused to let it go until I apologized... Anyway, I’ve ceased arguing with him now when he questions me despite the fact that I’m the one with the map, the Google directions, am giving him verbal directions to follow, AND he has absolutely no idea where we are at all in the first place... As long as he goes the right way when I tell him to, I don’t really care if he believes we went the same way before or not.

After he got a grudging apology (of sorts) out of me, we resumed driving to our first stop: Caernarfon castle. It is one of four castles we will be visiting in northern Wales. Together they make up a world heritage site. All four of them were built by King Edward I to consolidate his control of Wales after he put down the Welsh uprisings.

Caernarfon castle, and the three others as well, are ruined castles. All of the biodegradable materials have decayed, so only the stonework remains. The four we are visiting are very intact otherwise. We had a lot of fun exploring the towers and walking the battlements. One good thing about ruined castles is there isn’t usually much to read, and it doesn’t take very long to tour the entire compound. We were finished by 1pm.

Next we drove one hour south to Harlech castle. It was the castle that we ideally would have seen yesterday but didn’t have the time. We took a little shortcut across a 40p toll road. It was kind of a neat toll road. It was one lane at a time and very narrow to drive across. There was a really beautiful view over a lake. We saw Harlech castle. It wasn’t as cool as Caernarfon castle, but it was still nice. It has wonderful views from the towers out over the ocean. When we finished our tour, we headed for home.

In the car, I made sandwiches for lunch. They tasted a little bit like dish detergent again. Damn moldy bread! At least they weren’t as bad as the last time... From now on we are going to get the cheapest bread possible from now on.

We stopped at Tesco to pick up dinner. We bought some more rice for our leftover Indian food. We also decided to try their Kung Po chicken, and picked up new sandwich materials.

Back at the apartment, Davin took a shower while I wrote blog updates. Then we had dinner (our leftovers and Kung Po). Then I showered and Davin worked on selecting his favorite pictures of himself from our trip so far. Finally, we watched 2 Voyagers, and went to bed at 12:30am.
