Day 74: Conwy Castle and Hadrian's Wall (9/24/2010)

We got up at 9am again today. We skipped our English breakfast this morning. We needed the time to pack up our stuff for our long drive today. Before our six hour drive however, we had two castles to visit. First we had a twenty minute drive to Beaumaris Castle.

Beaumaris castle is the largest of the four castles built by King Edward I. We videotaped our tour of this castle. We tried to hurry through it because we have a long drive ahead of us. We were finished by 11:30am.

Next, we stopped by Tesco to grab some breakfast. We grabbed some cinnamon rolls and continued on our way. Out next stop was at Conwy castle. It was my second favorite of the four ruined castles. My favorite was Caernarfon. Conwy castle was really neat because its medieval city wall was still intact. Davin liked Conwy and Beaumaris the best. Conwy for the city wall, and Beaumaris because it was the largest and had the most classic design. Beaumaris was definitely the most like what one would imagine when picturing a classic medieval castle.

We finished seeing the castles by 1:10pm. It was finally time for us to get going on our six hour drive to Scotland. This was definitely the roughest day that I planned on this leg of the trip.

After driving 2.5 hours, we took a short break at a rest stop (Davin’s butt was really hurting! It sucks not having cruise control). We checked out the food offerings but found it all too expensive. They charged overpriced British restaurant prices for simple cafeteria offerings.

We continued on our way, and at 5pm we arrived at Hadrian’s Wall. We looked around briefly. It really isn’t very impressive since it’s been dismantled for the most part, and we were freezing our asses off!! The weather is really getting cold now that we’ve headed up north!

We headed back to the main freeway and decided to make a stop in the city of Carlisle for lunch. We hadn’t eaten anything yet because we really wanted some warm food. Somehow cold sandwiches in this freezing weather just wasn’t appealing to us. We parked (2P) and walked around but only found millions of Italian restaurants, or really overpriced options. So we continued on our way without eating. But then we happened upon a Tesco and decided to get a roast chicken for lunch. We ate it with the tortillas we’ve been carrying around with us and some salsa that we picked up as well (El Pollo Loco style meal). We ate that in the car as we continued on our way.

We arrived in the vicinity of our hotel around 9pm. We got a little lost but ended up at another Tesco, so we bought ice and called for directions. We then found the hotel no problems. We stayed at a Hilton tonight. It was nice to have real hotel accommodations for a change. The only thing missing was free internet. It just isn’t worth paying 6Pounds for it! Davin and I have been making a list of all the things we want to Google once we get internet again.

We settled in and I called Scott just to say ‘hi’. Then we watched 2 episodes Voyager, and I wrote blog bulletpoints. Finally we went to bed at 12:30pm.
