We woke up today at 10am. It was nice to not wake up to an alarm! We made it to our first breakfast on a cruise ship too. We enjoyed some cinnamon rolls, and mushy oatmeal.
Our ship has entered rougher seas today. It has been rocking and rolling since we got up. At first we weren’t affected by it, but as time went on it started getting to us. We found that it was impossible to concentrate on a task, like writing blog entries, without eventually getting sick. We spent almost two hours just lying in bed again thinking and talking. We got up around 2pm and went to lunch.
We decided that if the ship continues to roll this much we won’t be able to function, so we went to the Med Center to ask about medication. The hours there were quite limited, but I called reception and they had sea sickness medication available there. We took our medicine and watched a Voyager. It seemed to help fairly quickly, although we are still occasionally affected by the rolling, especially myself. I’ve always had a notoriously sensitive stomach. I managed to catch up on three blog entries however, so the day has still been productive. Davin played a bit of a computer game called Machinarium.
Around 5pm we decided to go in the jacuzzi. It is gloomy and windy outside. It was nice to relax in a hot tub while it was raining on and off around us. Best of all, almost noone else was around. The jacuzzis are heated to a barely tolerable temperature. In effect, they are disappointingly cold.
I noticed that I feel a lot better when I am outside. The fresh air helps ward off motion sickness. I hate walking the long hallways the most. I find it disturbing the way they tilt back and forth. I try to only look at the ground. It is amusing to watch other people walk the hallways however. Everyone moves as one, first to the right, then to the left. I’ve started playing a game of forcing myself to walk in a straight line down the hallways. It is very good exercise for precise muscle control, but I imagine I look very strange to others. I think maybe something like a malfunctioning robot, or an explorer in a heavy gravity atmosphere. Anyway, my game amuses me.
Davin and I think that we will be spending a lot of time watching Voyager on this cruise. It is one thing that can be done comfortably while the ship is constantly rolling. I’m wondering if the cruise was so cheap because any experienced cruiser knows that this is not a good time of year to be at sea. As long as we aren’t incapacitated to the point of vomiting it doesn’t really matter to us how enjoyable the cruise is. It is simply a mode of transportation to us. I honestly can’t see why people think cruises are fun. Davin says that if the cruise was our vacation he’d be really upset. So would I.
The atmosphere of being on a cruise conjures horror images of the 1950s summer camps that were once popular among the rich (think Dirty Dancing). I thought they had gone extinct. I was mistaken, they simply set sail. The daily schedules are littered with opportunities to waste money on art, jewelry, visits to the spa, fitness classes, etc. Other activities range from, playing ping pong or Wii bowling with the cruise staff, to tango lessons from Andre and Francine. We pretty much try to stay in our cabin as much as possible. I really don’t understand what about a cruise is supposed to be fun. Boring activities, mediocre food, cold jacuzzis, and sea sickness. Oh, and if you’re on the QM2, you are also surrounded by obnoxious, snooty, rich people, and their equally snooty army of mindless servants. Bizarre.
Davin and I watched another two Voyagers in the evening. We grabbed a quick dinner at 10pm. Then followed that up with another Voyager. Now it’s time for bed just past midnight. One more night down, ten to go.
